Exterior view of Vals taco restaurant outdoor service station canopy-covered dining area hidden by concrete wall and lush tropical greenery

Vals

Vals is an indoor-outdoor taco restaurant and bar located on the prominent Freret St. commercial corridor in Uptown New Orleans. The historic Art Moderne service station was renovated following national preservation guidelines, maintaining the exterior enameled panel cladding, storefront & garage door openings, concrete curbs indicating the original foundation, and interior plan layout. The front canopy was reconstructed to match the original, and a simple recessed addition was added to the side to accommodate the new commercial kitchen.

As Architecture Project Manager, Cassidy worked closely with the restaurant group owners and consultants to design the proposed building in keeping with the restaurant’s Latin American concept. Cassidy worked with local regulatory agencies to permit the project and wrote Part I & Part II historic tax credit applications.

In 2022, Vals was awarded the AIA New Orleans Architecture Merit Award for Commercial/Small Scale.
